Is Open Wi-Fi safe to use?

That quick button you push on the front of your router and printer to make them connect is made to be so easy. Unfortunately, it is a one button click for a hacker too. The Wi-Fi protected Set-up is one of the largest controversies at this time. It is an easy one step method to connect to a secure router, however, it is not safe! It can be exploited by a hacker and used to access the router. It is a feature that can be simply turned off in the router settings.

Using a VPN when connected to public Wi-Fi will allow an extra layer of security. Many businesses force this as a way to telework safely from a remote location. It will also help mitigate vulnerabilities when using your own device at work. Many Internet providers include VPN software options. Think of it as putting your information in a straw hidden inside a pipe. No one can see inside the straw to read your information as it passes through the pipe.
